Preventing Oppositional Responses

  • Offer choices whenever possible

  • The command needs to be in the present and not for a later time

  • Parents can alert their child about the command that will occur at a later time point.

  • Provide your child with the underlying reason for the command.

  • Before executing the command, ensure your child is focused on and understanding, create proximity to your child, and make direct eye contact.

  • Make the command clear and understandable,

  • Demonstrate a mentality that is patient and understands that mistakes are expected.
